Downed Trees On Belle Isle Available For Firewood

DETROIT (AP) - The state says people may help deal with trees on Detroit's Belle Isle that were knocked down by a mid-September storm and stock up on firewood supplies at the same time.

Starting Monday, the Department of Natural Resources says wood from more than 20 downed maple trees is available for free.

The state says the trees are stacked at one location and anyone interested in harvesting firewood may visit the DNR's administrative office on the island to get a timber permit. With the permit, people may cut and remove the wood during certain hours.

The wood may be cut and removed through Nov. 7.

Belle Isle in February became a state park, with the DNR taking over management as part of a cost-cutting effort for bankrupt Detroit.
