CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Lions announced Monday they have signed defensive tackle Andre Fluellen and have released cornerback Danny Gorrer.

The Lions needed to bring in a defensive tackle because Nick Fairley suffered a knee sprain in the team's Oct. 26 game against the Atlanta Falcons that is expected to keep him out for at least a month. Head coach Jim Caldwell has not ruled the possibility that Fairley's injury is season-ending.

Fluellen played 13 or more games for the Lions in each of the 2013, 2011, 2010 and 2009 seasons.

Fluellen has a long and intermittent history with the Lions, who drafted him in the third round in 2008. Fluellen has now been signed or re-signed eight times by Detroit, which after signing him as a rookie also inked him to deals in July 2011, March 2012, December 2012, July 2013, September 2013 and March 2014, according to the transactions log on the Fluellen's bio on the team website.

The addition of a defensive tackle to help compensate for Fairley's loss was expected, and Gorrer tweeted the news of his own dismissal before the team announced it.

Gorrer had played in six games for Detroit this season.

The Lions also announced Monday they have activated rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy from short-term injured reserve. Detroit's second-round pick this year, Van Noy missed the first half of the season with a sports hernia.

In addition, Detroit made several practice squad transactions Monday, signing tight end Jordan Thompson, cornerback Trevin Wade and defensive tackle Roy Philon and releasing tight end Ifeanyi Momah.
