Man Ends Up Dead After Encounter In Detroit With Person From Online Dating Site

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police say a 26-year-old man who met someone through an online dating site wound up dead the night he planned an encounter with his new friend.

Officers were dispatched to Detroit Receiving Hospital around 3:10 a.m. Thursday and were informed that the victim arrived at hospital, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Hospital security guards told police the man was dropped off at the emergency room by a friend driving a blue Dodge Charger with several bullet holes on the driver's side door.

Police spoke to the man's friend, who said the whole incident stemmed from an encounter with someone the man met on a social media dating site.

The victim and his friend apparently planned to meet his online date near Caldwell Street and East Outer Drive, just west of Mound Road on the city's east side. When the victim and his friend arrived at the meeting place, the online date-turned-suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and told both to get out of the car. When they refused, the suspect opened fire, striking the car and the victim multiple times.

The victim's friend told police he realized his friend had been shot, so he rushed to the hospital -- but it was too late.

Police are currently looking for the suspect but did not provide a description. It wasn't immediately clear if the suspect is a male or female.

Anyone who might have information on the case is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
