Victor Martinez Named Top DH, Wins Silver Slugger

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez has been awarded the American League Silver Slugger award for being "the top hitter" at his position in his league.

Martinez won his only other Silver Slugger award in 2004, when he shared the honor as the top-hitting catcher in the American League with former Tiger Iván Rodríguez.

Martinez posted career-highs with a .335 batting average and 32 home runs. Martinez was second to Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (.341) for the American League lead in batting average.

Martinez had the highest OPS (.974) and WAR (5.3) among six qualified designated hitters, including David Ortiz, Nelson Cruz, Billy Butler, Chris Carter and Adam Dunn.
