FREE Men's Health Event Saturday At Ford Field In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - When it comes to health care, women tend to be more proactive — and organizers of a Men's Health Event in downtown Detroit this Saturday are hoping to change that.

Men are less likely to visit a doctor every year for a routine check up compared to women. In fact, many men stop going to the doctors once they stop seeing a pediatrician.

Michael Lutz, M.D., president of the MIU Men's Health Foundation and urologist with Michigan Institute of Urology, it's important for men to pay attention to their health for themselves and their loved ones.

"There are studies that show when the man of the family becomes ill or dies the family suffers an irreversible tragedy," he told WWJ's Dr. Deanna Lites.

The Men's Health Event 20XIV will be held Saturday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ford Field, Gate G.

Men can have access to health care providers and be screened for everything from oral cancer and cholesterol to hearing and mental health.

This free event, developed by doctors, will give men a better understanding of how to stay healthy, screen men for some of the most treatable diseases and to assess their current health, share information about men's health topics and increase awareness about advances in healthcare.

"Despite increased attention to healthcare, many men still do not choose to know about their health, and historically, the medical community has failed overall to educate men in the role of disease prevention and proper health maintenance," said Lutz. "Through the MIU Men's Health event, we are inspiring men to 'fight like a man' for their health, and our screenings have saved the lives of men attending our event."
