3 Feet Of Snow Falls In Upper Michigan, More On The Way

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - The National Weather Service says about three feet of snow has fallen on parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula with even more on the way before the front passes.

As of Wednesday morning, 36.1 inches of snow had fallen since Monday in Marquette County near Negaunee. Generally, up to 2 feet fell in parts of the Upper Peninsula with lower totals along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and those areas could see up to 34 inches before the storm ends.

Snowfall started Monday and driving conditions were reported to be hazardous and in "very poor condition" amid heavy snow.

Steven Fleegel, with the Marquette Branch of the National Weather Service, says northern Michigan usually see a heavy snowfall this early in the season about,  every three to five years — although this is a bit different.

"The things we're always used to is more of the lake effect, which is more fluffy," said Fleegel. "In this situation, a good portion of this snow is more of that heavier wet snow, so it's definitely been having a little more of an impact on the roads and we've been hearing about sporatic power outages in the area. So it definitely affects us a little more than we're used to."

The storm comes as an Arctic weather system pushes across the northern Midwest, expecting to bring a sharp drop in temperatures across Michigan — and maybe even a little snow to metro Detroit.

AccuWeather Meteorologist John Feerick said things turned much colder during a blustery Tuesday night. Wednesday, he said, will be brisk and cold with a high only around 38 degrees — feeling more like the mid-20s when you factor in the wind. For Thursday, AccuWeather is calling for flurries, a snow shower and a high of only 37 degrees.

Here's the detailed forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:
