Gunman Arrested, No One Hurt In Shelby Township Standoff

SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) - Thankfully no one was injured in an armed standoff that lasted roughly an hour and a half Tuesday in Shelby Township.

Captain Stephen Stanbury said, with the assistance of the Macomb County SWAT team, officers arrested a barricaded gunman at his home near Auburn and Ryan roads.

"Two shots were fired in the basement of the home," Stanbury said. "Our officers showed great restraint by not just randomly returning fire, but instead just holding their positions on the perimeter around the home."

Stanbury turned himself in shortly after the Macomb County SWAT team arrived on the scene.

As a precaution, authorities evacuated nearby residents and a Speedway gas station across the street, which Stanbury said is part of the protocol for this type of situation.

"(We) ensure the safety of the area residents by evacuating them or having them shelter in their home, preferably in their basement," Stanbury said. "We do try to establish contact with the subject to try to find out what is going on, and then we establish a perimeter to contain the scene, to keep the subject localized."

At this point police aren't saying what might have led to the standoff.

The man's name was not immediately released. Charges are pending.
