Tigers Hire Newhan As Assistant Hitting Coach
DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers have hired David Newhan as their assistant hitting coach.
Newhan joins the Tigers after a season in the Oakland organization as the manager for Class A Vermont. He also spent three seasons as the hitting coach for Lake Elsinore, a Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
Newhan played parts of eight major league seasons with the Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets and Houston Astros. He is a son of retired Los Angeles Times reporter Ross Newhan, winner of the Hall of Fame's 2000 J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing.
