Police Patrol Fraser High School After Apparent Shooting Threat

FRASER (WWJ) - Students at Fraser High School can expect to see a large police presence on Wednesday after a threat was found on a bathroom wall at the school.

Police and school officials say they don't think the threat is credible -- but they don't want to take any chances.

"Student safety is our top priority," Superintendent David Richards said in a statement. "We investigate each and every concern that is brought to us, and we will continue to take the necessary actions to ensure everyone's safety."

Nicole Malak, spokesperson for Fraser Public Schools, said officers will be visible at the school on Wednesday.

"There is a patrol car students will see, hopefully to calm some of those anxious nerves that maybe some students are feeling," she said. "That's just one measure that we're taking."

The heightened security is over an "inflammatory statement" discovered on Tuesday, described as graffiti on a bathroom stall mentioning a gunman planning to shoot someone at the school. The apparent threat was also spread via social media.

As soon as administrators were made aware of the threat, they contacted police.

Investigators are still talking with students but have not yet identified who wrote the message.

Officials said it's likely a student's poor joke, but they are taking the threat seriously.

"While students can make poor decisions, the district must act with diligence in our response. This incident reinforces the utmost importance of parents talking with their children about making threats and the potential consequences that follow," Richards said.

Letters notifying parents of the situation were sent out Tuesday.

The school is located on Garfield Road just south of 15 Mile Road.
