Vandals Set Fire To Clarkston High School Football Field
INDEPENDENCE TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities are working to identify whoever set fire to portions of a synthetic football field at an Oakland County high school.
Independence Township firefighters were called to Clarkston High School Sunday afternoon after getting a tip and arrived to find some athletic equipment and portions of the football field, including the Wolves' logo, had been burned.
Principal Gary Kaul said the vandals used an accelerant to burn two six-foot square areas of the turf and two tackling dummies, although he wouldn't estimate a cost of the damage.
"The damage didn't amount to thousands and thousands of dollars ... and the field is still usable," Kaul told the Oakland Press. "However, it could get more expensive if the accelerant isn't able to be washed out or if it's done some kind of damage that we can't see."
Fire officials plan to wash the accelerant off of the field.
Kaul says accelerants were used in similar incidents at area businesses two weeks ago, including at Fountains Golf Course on Maybee Road.
"Something's going on here," he said.
The Oakland County Sheriff's arson unit is investigating the incident.
