FEMA Extends Deadline For Michigan Homeowners Affected By Floods To Apply For Help

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Those in southeast Michigan who were hit hard by late summer flooding have more time to apply for federal help.

Gov. Rick Snyder and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan have announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) granted the governor's request for an extension for residents seeking assistance, adding 20 more days to the application period.

"We're only a week away from the original deadline — there's still 700 requests coming in a day, which means there are thousands of people out there who are eligible for support," Duggan told WWJ's Vickie Thomas and other reporters at a news conference Monday.

The new registration deadline is Dec. 14, "...But please don't wait," Duggan said.

Snyder declared a state of disaster for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties after the Aug. 11 storms. Some areas received more than 6 inches of rain which flooded basements, streets and freeways. Damage and cleanup costs have been estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

More than 115,000 residents have already registered for help; and FEMA has approved more than $119 million in individual assistance.

Some areas received more than six inches of rain, which flooded basements, streets and freeways over two days in August.

Snyder says some people could receive help with temporary housing, repairs or low-cost loans.

To register, southeast Michigan residents should call 1-800-621- FEMA (3362), or visit disasterassistance.gov for more information.
