Bloomfield Hills Spine Specialist Charged With Health Care Fraud

DETROIT (AP/WWJ) — An Oakland County doctor has been charged in a nearly $2 million health care fraud scheme that allegedly involved bogus spinal fusions.

The government says Dr. Aria Sabit of Bloomfield Hills told patients he was performing spinal fusion. But when patients subsequently sought help from other doctors, they learned that no devices were implanted.

The criminal complaint unsealed Monday lists five patients, but the FBI says there are many more. Sabit appeared in court Monday and will remain locked up until a bond hearing next Monday.

A message seeking comment was left with his lawyer.

Sabit was licensed in Michigan in 2011. He surrendered his California license after misconduct allegations.

Prosecutors also are seeking to revoke Sabit's U.S. citizenship, which was granted in 2013.
