Horrible Bosses 2: Why Didn't They Leave Well Enough Alone?

DETROIT (WWJ) - Why didn't they just leave well enough alone? That's what I was thinking after seeing "Horrible Bosses 2 (HB2)," the sequel to the 2011 hit comedy "Horrible Bosses." While the original film was creative and funny, this second one just tries too hard. There are some funny moments in HB2, but there just weren't enough of them to keep me from constantly shifting in my seat and wondering what time it was.

Why was I wondering about the time? Because, for the most part, I was bored. As I mentioned, there were times when I did laugh – particularly at the beginning of the film – but after that, the laughs were few and far between.

In the original movie, Nick, Dale and Kurt really do have three horrible bosses. So, the lengths they were willing to go to in order to free themselves of their bosses made for a crazy storyline and lots of laughter. But this time around, they don't have any bosses. They've developed a unique product that they decide to manufacture themselves after getting a promise from an investor that he'll make a substantial purchase.

While most business owners would jump at such an opportunity, smart ones wouldn't without some sort of contract or purchase agreement! So, for me, that was a huge flaw in the script. I could see if they didn't notice the fine print in the contract, but there wasn't a contract at all! Totally unbelievable.

I also couldn't buy into the plot hatched by Rex, the rich investor's son, to get rid of his dad. Sure, his dad is ruthless and mean, but not so mean that Rex isn't able to live the high life. He wears expensive clothes and lives in a mansion with a gorgeous hilltop view! Plus, there's a maid at his beck and call! So, if you can live a rich, spoiled life without all the headaches, why not just stay away from the office and hang out at the beach everyday?

If you're a fan of Horrible Bosses, keep those memories alive and pass on HB2. And if you decide to take my advice, consider it an early Christmas gift from me to you.

In addition to Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis reprising their roles as Nick, Dale and Kurt, Jennifer Aniston returns as the sex-obsessed Julia, and Jamie Foxx reprises his role as Dean "MF" Jones. Chris Pine stars as Rex and Christoph Waltz stars as his dad, Bert Hanson.
