Dombrowski Calls Report About Scherzer Inaccurate

A tweet by ESPN's Buster Olney had the winter meetings buzzing Tuesday afternoon in San Diego.

The response to the Olney tweet allowed Detroit fans to once again believe that the Tigers might be able to re-sign the 2013 American League Cy Young winner.

However, Tigers president and GM Dave Dombrowski continues to say the opposite. "There is not one thing that has changed from the Detroit Tigers' perspective," Dombrowski said. "Our situation has not changed. I'm not sure where various rumors start, but our situation has not changed whatsoever."

Dombrowski went on to credit the starters they already have saying, "We are very happy with our starting staff as we sit here right now."

The Tigers could still be interested in the services of Scherzer; in fact they probably are. It's just that Dombrowski won't fuel that belief. "I can 100 percent guarantee you that our situation has not changed whatsoever, and we've had no further conversations," Dombrowski said.

I asked the GM what went through his mind when he saw the Olney report.

"That I don't know where he got that from — that's not accurate," Dombrowski said. "I've heard the same thing and that's just not accurate. I'm not sure where it comes from or who it comes from. I know it didn't come from this room, but that's not accurate."

Dombrowski did take the time to crack a joke before the Scherzer discussion was completely over saying, "The other thing that I'll say is that I hope Mr. I (Mike Ilitch) didn't see (the tweet) because he'd be saying where did that come from?"
