Focus: HOPE Seeks Donations For Holiday Meal Costs

DETROIT (AP) — Focus: HOPE is seeking donations to help with the cost of food boxes for area senior citizens.

The nonprofit's annual Special Holiday Delivery will be held Saturday. Focus: HOPE says a $25 donation is enough to help feed a senior citizen throughout the holidays.

The food boxes include turkeys, vegetables, fruits, canned goods and a variety of packaged items.

Volunteers will pick up the boxes Saturday morning at the Focus: HOPE food warehouse in Detroit and deliver them to about 1,200 senior citizens.

Focus: HOPE is a Detroit-based human and civil rights organization. It was founded in 1968 after riots widened the rift between Detroit's black and white residents.

Its food outreach program provides nutritionally balanced meals to 39,000 senior citizens each month.

"The holidays can be a difficult time for low-income senior citizens, especially those who live alone," said Stephen Ragan, Focus: HOPE chief development and external relations officer. "We want to fill their cupboards with plenty of nutritious food to last them throughout the holiday season. Our volunteers who make these special deliveries also provide a little holiday cheer for the seniors."
