Traveling This Holiday Season? The Best Airfare Prices Might Already Be Gone

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- Planning to travel out-of-town for the holidays? There are some certain tricks to use when flying at this time of year.

David Fishman with Cadillac Travel in Southfield says the timing of purchasing airfare is everything.

"You should always book your airfare as far in advance as possible," Fishman said. "Airfares come out 330 days in advance, so the sooner you can book your airfare, the better. It used to be you could wait and based on inventory control and how they played with their numbers you would get better fares closer to the flight -- that doesn't happen anymore. You actually get better fares father out."

Fishman said that travelers may be able to find cruises for a decent price, but overall airfares are much higher because there's less availability of seats, thanks to the consolidation of airlines in the last five-to-seven years.

"Living in Michigan, clearly any place warm seems to be most the popular destinations," Fishman said. "The all-inclusives, the Maya Riviera cruises and to Florida, those types of destinations seem to be the most popular. Then you'll get the occasional people who like to ski who will go up to northern Michigan or out west."

Fishman did, however, say that there are deals to fly to Europe right now.
