Investigation Reportedly Launched Into Christmas Hack Of Gaming Systems

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - The group behind two major gaming systems hack on Christmas day are reportedly being investigated by the FBI.
Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation were targets of a cyberattack by the Lizard Squad. The hack led to some gamers who tried to play Internet-connected games unable to play for more than 24 hours, the International Business Times reported.
The FBI has not confirmed the investigation according to reports.
The hackers used artificially high levels of traffic "designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay," according to a blog post by Catherine Jensen, VP, SCEA Consumer Experience.
Both companies are reporting that their respective gaming systems are back online and working. Microsoft and Sony are utilizing social media to respond to any lingering concerns.
In a report in The Guardian, founding members of Lizard Squad conducted the hacks for "amusement" and to highlight weaknesses in the security of gaming systems.
According to www.mainstreet.com, gamers can take steps to protect their systems by securing their router; regularly checking for updates and review the level of access apps are requesting.
