What's The Cure For Party-Time Overindulgence?

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's fun to party on New Year's Eve, but too much alcohol can leave your head pounding and your body feeling as dry as the Sahara desert.

Yes, we're talking hangover. So what can you do?

If you're going to drink alcohol, do it in moderation.

Make sure you have food in your stomach to absorb alcohol and drink a glass of water after each alcoholic beverage to keep you hydrated says WWJ Health Reporter Dr. Deanna Lites.

You might also want to avoid drinks that contain a substance called congeners says DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan toxicologist Andrew King.

King says congeners are a type of chemical compound that are the result of the fermentation process and congeners are associated with hangovers.

Brandy, wine and tequila have high levels of congeners.

If you have a hangover, Dr. King recommends hydration the next day, using an anti-inflammatory aspirin or ibuprofen and, he says, vitamin B-6 may be beneficial.

Have a happy and safe New Year.
