Gov. Snyder Signs Detroit Development District Bills

LANSING (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation designed to create an economic development district in Detroit.

The bills signed Friday allow for the creation of another Next Michigan Development Corp. Businesses locating in the districts are eligible for property tax abatements and other tax breaks.

Such development districts already exist in the Upper Peninsula, the Grand Traverse region and elsewhere.

The Republican governor says in a statement that the district aims to create jobs and opportunities in the city.

Snyder signed nine other pieces of legislation on Friday. One of them suspends a person's Medicaid eligibility if he or she is in an inpatient program, jail or prison.
