CBS DETROIT - The Detroit Lions defense flourished this season under defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, and now that the Lions have played their last game of the year, Austin will begin exploring opportunities to be a head coach next season.

Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reports Austin will meet Wednesday with the Atlanta Falcons and Thursday with the San Francisco 49ers, whose former head coach Jim Harbaugh accepted a college job as the head coach at Michigan.

This season was the first for Austin as a coordinator in the NFL. The Lions finished the year ranked second in the league with 17.6 points allowed per game.
