Metro Detroit Braces For Dangerously Cold Temperatures, More Snow

DETROIT (WWJ) -  Metro Detroit is getting a taste of snow in the midst of a deep freeze -- and winter's grip doesn't appear to be letting up any time soon.

"It is very cold here in southeast Michigan and this pattern is going to continue all week. We're talking some of the coldest air of the season," said CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus.

After about an inch of snowfall overnight, Madaus said the region will see flurries on and off throughout the day Tuesday.

"We'll top out around 20 degrees later on today, with wind chill readings from the single digits to the teens," he said, adding that temperatures are just slightly warmer than this time last year. "The record low was actually set one year ago today, when we dropped down to 14 below zero."

The "big chill" is going to come Wednesday, Madaus said, as a cold air system filters down into the Great Lakes area.

"In fact, Wednesday and Thursday will be the coldest days this week, with single digit high temperatures," he said. "Thursday morning it will feel like zero to three degrees above."
