Red Wings Center Pavel Datsyuk's Donation Helps SandCastles Children's Grief Program

DETROIT – Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk is giving back this holiday season through a fundraising partnership benefiting Henry Ford SandCastles, a children's grief support program.

The four-time NHL All-Star has donated several coveted items for purchase to raise funds for the program.

Datsyuk knows firsthand what it is like to lose someone near and dear to you early in life. He was only 15 years old when his mother died and 11 years later, he lost his father to a heart attack.

"It is a privilege to be able to help others, especially children that have lost someone so meaningful in their lives," says Datsyuk. "I am where I am today because others took the time to help groom and care for me when I was young."

SandCastles offers year round grief support groups at no charge for three to 18 year olds. The program serves about 766 participants at any given time at eight locations across metro Detroit.

SandCastles provides a caring place for children to share their feelings and journey through grief in a safe and supportive environment.

"We at SandCastles are so very delighted that Mr. Datsyuk has chosen to share his kindness and support with our children and their families. We are truly grateful for his very generous gifts," says Peggy Nielsen, manager and founder of SandCastles.

If you still have last minute shopping to do for that Wings fan on your list, consider gifting them with a practice visit for two (2), plus post-practice meet & greet with Pavel Datsyuk on Jan.16, an autographed jersey, autographed puck, or Red Wings fan pack.

In addition to support groups, the program offers an annual weekend camp and community education. For more information call (313) 874-6681 or visit www.aboutsandcastles.org
