Southfield Launches New App

By Edward Cardenas

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - The city of Southfield has launched a new app for Android and Apple devices with information for residents, visitors and those who work in the community.

A committee of city personnel worked for the past several months to develop the Spot Southfield app for Apple and Android smart phones and tablets.

"We are excited to offer the community a convenient new tool to stay connected to Southfield," commented City Administrator Fred Zorn, in a release. "This new app will provide a wealth of information to users about the City and all its attractions, restaurants, shopping and more."

The city of 71,000 residents, which swells to a daytime population of 175,000, has 774 acres of parks land and 27 million square feet of office space.

The free app provides users with detailed information in eight categories. Users can navigate each category by tapping on a freeway sign on the homepage for:

  • Eat: A breakdown of various dining options in the city as well as 'nearby' option,
  • Play: Includes entertainment and recreation activities for the whole family from golf to theatres to nightlife,
  • Stay: Offers hotel and other accommodation options in Southfield from one night to extended stay,
  • Shop: Provides information about products for sale from automotive to florists,
  • Events: City activities listed in one location,
  • Media: Includes static videos, live broadcast of Cable 15 live and the ability to create a special Southfield postcard for their friends, family or themselves,
  • Find: Navigate through the city to a destination,
  • Services: Connect with city department or services.

The app was developed in coordination with Bar-Z. Future plans for the app include the ability for users to report issues in the city such as potholes directly to the appropriate department as well as the option to book golf tee times right from your phone, according to city officials.
