Rush Hour Commute Could Be A Sloppy One

DETROIT (WWJ) - One to three inches of snow is expected to fall throughout the Metro Detroit area this evening causing commuters quite a headache for the morning drive.

However , Robert Conrad, Director of Road Maintenance for Wayne County says their toughest opponent tonight isn't the snow.

"This is probably one of the more difficult temperatures that we have to work with - salt works to a minimal amount as far as stopping that bond to the pavement but you won't see wet pavement like you would on a 30 degree snow storm," he noted.

"The priority when it starts snowing is to get that first round of salt down so we can prevent that snow from bonding with the pavement and creating that icy hard part that can be experienced," said Conrad. "Our biggest difficulty is going to be the temperature."

Conrad says his crews were able to spread salt on roadways in preparation for the snow this evening.

Craig Bryson with the Oakland County Road Commission says their full fleet should be out on area roadways early Friday morning:

"Typically, our rule is to have all available trucks in by about 2 a.m. so we can get things all cleaned up by morning rush hour, that's tentatively the plan tonight - but we are going to wait and see how things look at that point."

About 50 trucks will be out on the road Thursday evening after which Bryson says an assessment of the weather conditions for morning will be made.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for all of Southeast Michigan. Snow will continue overnight with an additional two - three inches of snow by the start of Friday morning's commute.
