Windsor Police Search For Owner Of U.S. Marine Corps Coin Found In Possession Of Suspected Burglar

DETROIT (WWJ) - Windsor police are searching for the owner of a stolen United States Marine Corps "challenge coin."

Investigators say the coin was found on a suspect, 31-year old Jeffrey Fletcher, who was arrested for breaking into an apartment in the 500 block of Riverside Drive on December 17.

Fletcher allegedly stole a parcel in the lobby, opened up residents mail, and entered two vehicles that were parked in the basement. After his arrest on January 12, authorities discovered that Fletcher was in possession of the Marine Corps coin, which is believed to have been stolen.

Police are now trying to locate the owner of the coin, which is often awarded to military members as a way to recognize high achievers.

The front side of the coin features an emblem and "United States Marine Corps," and the owner will be able to tell investigators what's on the back, said Constable Andrew Drouillard.

"We're hoping the rightful owner will be able to give us the details of the unique features on the other side and give us the circumstances of what happened, or if their vehicle was broken into or why it was missing," Drouillard told WWJ's Scott Ryan. "You know, maybe it was somebody who came over to Canada for the weekend."

Investigators want to hear from anyone who can describe the back of the coin. Anyone with information is urged to contact Windsor Police at 519-255-6700.

"It might have some sentimental value to this person so we're hoping to get the medallion back to them," Drouillard said.

Meantime, Fletcher is facing charges of breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools and mail theft.
