Habitat For Humanity Looking For 'Winter Warrior' Volunteers

DETROIT (WWJ) - The need for affordable housing doesn't take a winter break.

Habitat for Humanity Detroit recently kicked off its Winter Warriors program to encourage individuals and corporations to volunteer throughout the winter months.

"A lot of people think we only build during the spring and summer, so we are really trying to get the word out that their help is needed now as well," Crystal Bell, volunteer coordinator, said in a statement.

Volunteers who join the Winter Warriors program, sponsored by Moosejaw, will earn special perks such as winter clothing and accessories. Through March 31, volunteers can receive:

  • Volunteer 1 time and receive a Habitat Detroit Ice Scraper
  • Volunteer 5 times and receive a Carhartt Knit Hat
  • Volunteer 10 times and receive a Neofleece Headband
  • Volunteer 15 times and receive Toasty Glove Liners
  • Volunteer 20 times and receive a Habitat Detroit Signature Sweatshirt

.
Habitat Detroit is currently building two homes in Lincoln Park and another in the Morningside Commons community on Detroit's east side.

Volunteers can participate in a variety on construction activities -- no experience necessary -- or donate their time in the Habitat for Humanity offices.

Those interested in volunteering can register by visiting www.habitatdetroit.org/volunteersignup or by calling 313-521-6691.
