Officials: 1 Dead After Fire At Senior Apartments

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Officials say a fire at a Lansing senior citizen apartment complex left one resident dead and forced dozens of others to evacuate.

The Lansing State Journal reports friends, relatives and rescue personnel helped senior citizens negotiate the sidewalks in front of Friendship Manor Apartments as they left the building following Sunday's fire, which was reported shortly after 6 p.m.

TV stations WLNS and WILX say a woman in her 60s died. Lansing Fire Department spokesman Steve Babcock says the first firefighters to arrive found heavy smoke pouring from an upper floor and called for additional units. Crews from Lansing Township and East Lansing also responded.

Residents who couldn't leave immediately were first put on buses and then taken to the Lansing Center. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
