Report: Scherzer Signs 7-year, $210 Million Deal With Nationals
DETROIT (CBS Detroit/AP) -- News came in late Sunday night that the possibility of Detroit Tigers ace Max Scherzer signing a long-term contract with the Washington Nationals was extremely high. A few hours later, reports surfaced that a deal was reached and Scherzer would be leaving the Motor City.
Monday morning, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that the deal is worth $210 million for seven years, an astronomical number compared to what the Tigers offered him in the spring.
Scherzer, a 30-year-old right-hander, is a free agent after spending the past five seasons with the Detroit Tigers. He turned down an offer from Detroit last March that would have paid him $144 million from 2015-20.
He was 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA in 2014, a year after going 21-3 with a 2.90 ERA and being voted the best pitcher in the American League.
