Ex-Detroit Prep Football Star Jayru Campbell Released From Jail

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A former Detroit prep football star who body-slammed a school security officer and later pushed his girlfriend was released from jail Wednesday morning.

Jayru Campbell, 18, served a 60-day jail sentence after his assault against the guard in a hallway at Cass Tech High School was caught on video and posted to YouTube.

On the same September day he was released, authorities say he pushed a 17-year-old girl to the ground in a dispute over her cell phone.

The Detroit Free Press reports Campbell received a seven-month sentence, with credit for time served, for violating his probation.

He pleaded guilty in November to a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence and was sentenced to a year of probation. Prosecutors asked a judge Tuesday to reinstate felony charges against Campbell in the girl's assault.

As a quarterback, Campbell led Cass Tech to back to back state titles in 2011 and 2012. He had committed to play at Michigan State University in 2015, but later changed his mind.
