Detroit Ranked Second-Worst City For Bed Bugs In 2014

DETROIT (WWJ) -- In the latest national study, Detroit placed second on a list for the worst cities for bed bugs.

The pest control company Orkin recently released the rankings based on the number of bedbug treatments it performed from January to December 2014. Chicago came in No. 1 in the third annual report. Detroit moved up two spots from 4th place in the 2013 ranking.

"Bed bugs are a serious issue across the country, and they're very difficult to control," Orkin Entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison said. "Bed bugs are not limited to any level of cleanliness or income, which means they can be found in any home or hotel. They're great hitchhikers, and people often bring them inside on their clothes or in their luggage."

The Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek area also made the list, coming in at No. 20 -- up from the No. 33 in 2013.

You can see the entire list HERE along with tips on how to keep bed bugs out of your home and what to do if you already have them.
