Video Released, Reward Offered In Case Of Dog Left Chained Behind Walmart

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - Investigators have released a video in hopes of identifying two people who left a dog chained behind a Walmart store — leading her to chew off her own paw to escape.

Roseville police are asking the public take a long look at the clip which shows a gray or silver Chrysler vehicle pulling up in an alley behind the Walmart on Gratiot at 12 Mile Road in Roseville.

When the vehicle stops, two black males get the dog out of the backseat and tie her to a gate.

It happened at around 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 18.

"This dog had lost one of its hind paws, a cable wrapped around the leg that was so tight that it was embedded in the skin," said Roseville Police Chief James Berlin. "Apparently, the dog had gnawed its own foot off in an attempt to escape from this cable that was holding it."

A $1,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

"It took us a couple days to get the video together, and we're just hoping it's gonna peak somebody's interest and they'll take a look at it and recognize, you know, the vehicle...the two individuals, or possibly the dog," said Deputy Police Chief Donald Glando, updating WWJ on the case on Tuesday.

Glandon said the dog  — a tan and white mixed breed now named Courtney — is doing well following surgery. Her right rear leg had to be amputated in order to save her from further infection.

Courtney is being cared for at a foster home through"A Hopeful Heart Animal Rescue" and is expected to be available for adoption once she's healed.

Anyone with information about this case should call Roseville police at 586 775-2100
