Giving Girls The Building Blocks For Constructive Future Through Imagination And Design

BIRMINGHAM - "I didn't even know girls do construction." That was the reaction of one fourth grade girl during the Block Kids for Girls Event held in Birmingham.

Girls representing all nine Birmingham Elementary Schools came together to imagine, design and construct projects during the event. The girls learned that the construction, design, and build industry is open to everyone.

"It was fun to see my ideas come to life.  Girls need to learn about construction ... It is a great learning experience," said Sydney Lee, a fourth-grader at Bingham Elementary School.

At the event, over 50 girls were challenged to use their creativity to design and build a project with a kit of items provided for them. The event was judged by women professionals in the design and build industry.

The first place winner was Maya Tajano, from Beverly Elementary. She created a ship, anchor and all, with her building kit. She will now be advancing to the Regional Competition. Second place went to Lailah Palmer from Greenfield Elementary and third place was awarded to Annabelle Saunders of West Maple Elementary.

The event was made possible through a partnership between the National Association of Women in Construction -Detroit Chapter, and the Birmingham Education Foundation.
