I-94 Reopens After HAZMAT Crews Clear Fuel From Road

ALLEN PARK (WWJ) - Westbound I-94 in Allen Park reopened Thursday afternoon after HAZMAT crews finished clearing thousands of gallons of fuel from the road way.

Diana Cross, with the Michigan Department of Transportation, says a little winter weather hindered the clean-up process.

"A little bit of a frozen rain - that came in for a while kind of got in the way of the absorbent being able to pull up the fuel ... we also had to bring in to break up the icy patch that was on top of the fuel - it really was a mile and a half stretch."

According to police, a semi-truck driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a guard rail, causing the rig to roll over, Wednesday night, and the fuel to spill. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

"The diesel fuel was all cleared up - it did take quite some time to clean up that quantity - HAZMAT situation and we did have a little bit of bad weather part of the problem. It took quite a bit of time but now it is reopen."

Cross says the cleanup took longer than expected because icy road conditions made removing the fuel more difficult.
