Winter Storm Watch: Up To 6 Inches Of Snow Expected This Weekend

DETROIT (WWJ) - It could be southeast Michigan's biggest snowfall so far this season.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties from Saturday night through Sunday night.

AccuWeather Meteorologist John Feerick says metro Detroiters expect the snow to begin falling after midnight Saturday.

"It certainly looks like a plowable snow for much of the reason, with certainly some hazardous travel as well," he said.

While areas south of 8 Mile Road could see six inches of snow, Oakland and Macomb counties are expecting only about four inches.  Areas along the Ohio border could see eight inches, according to AccuWeather.

The National Weather Service says moderate to heavy snowfall is expected, with localized blowing and drifting snow Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. Forecasters say motorists should expect reduced visibility on the roads — although it's not yet clear if conditions would still be dicey for the Monday morning commute.

Meantime, it's not difficult to imagine the threat of this storm being met with a healthy dose of skepticism after this week's much-hyped east coast blizzard missed New York City and Philadelphia.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Rachel Kulik says the forecast has already changed over the past 24 hours.

The challenge, she said, is sorting through the various computer forecast models and deciding which ones best represent what will happen — and there's  pressure to get the forecast right — especially for this weekend...

"People have plans this weekend," Kulik said. "...I mean, Super Bowl is on Sunday, so people need to know, like, do we need to cancel? Do we need to get there earlier and stuff. So, definitely, everyone's waiting on our forecast to see what's gonna happen."

WWJ Newsradio 950 will be keeping an eye on the storm all weekend long.
