Sen. Peters Joins Great Lakes Task Force, Appointed To Homeland Security Subcommittees

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - U.S. Sen. Gary Peters, D-Michigan, recently announced his appointment to the Senate Great Lakes Task Force and two subcommittees overseeing federal spending and services

Peters joins fellow Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow on the Senate Great Lakes Task Force, a bipartisan working group made up of Senators representing the states bordering the Great Lakes.

"Michigan is blessed with abundant natural resources like the Great Lakes, and I look forward to working with my colleagues from across the region to preserve them," Senator Peters said in a release. "Thousands of Michigan jobs revolve around a strong and healthy Great Lakes, from fishing to agriculture to tourism. We must work together to protect our Great Lakes and ensure economic strength for future generations, and I look forward to doing that on this task force."

Peters stated he will work with his colleagues in the Senate to preserve and protect the Great Lakes, highlight the economic benefits that come from the Great Lakes and the need to combat threats from invasive species, including Asian Carp.

Additionally Peters, who is a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, was appointed to the Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management (FSO) and the Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management (RAFM).

"I am honored to serve on these two important subcommittees to provide greater oversight of government spending and services so that Americans and our homeland are safe and protected," he said in a release. "I am committed to working with my Democratic and Republican colleagues on these subcommittees to find ways for our government agencies to run more efficiently and effectively and keep our communities secure while continuing to streamline government and make it work better for taxpayers."

The Subcommittee on Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management (FSO) is responsible for overseeing the effectiveness and efficiency of federal spending and preventing waste, fraud and abuse.

The Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs and Federal Management (RAFM) reviews the effectiveness and impact of federal rules and regulations, and oversees federal employees and the effectiveness of federal agencies and departments, including current national security methods.
