Burglar Shoots Bay City Officer, Who Critically Wounds Man

BAY CITY AP) — Authorities say a burglary suspect shot a Bay City police officer, who fired back and critically wounded the attacker.

WSGW-AM and WNEM-TV report the Bay County man shot Officer Brandon Murphy in the leg about 1:30 a.m. Monday. Police say the 14-year veteran returned fire, critically injured the suspect.

Murphy was hospitalized in good condition.

Police say Murphy and another officer answered a home burglary call and Murphy tracked the suspect about a block away in the snow, where the shooting took place.

State police are investigating the shooting.

The Bay City Times says Murphy is the first Bay City officer shot while on duty since two officers were killed in 1991. It says a Bay City officer was wounded while serving with a SWAT team in Saginaw in 1993.
