Donations Pour In For Detroit Man Who Walks 21-Mile Commute

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) -- More than $44,000 has been raised for a Detroit man who walks 21 miles to and from work every day.

James Robertson walks about eight miles from his home in Detroit to his job in Rochester Hills, and 13 miles the other way. After the 56-year-old's story was reported by the Detroit Free Press, people across the country began to donate money through multiple crowd-funding efforts to buy Robertson a car. People are also donating to help him pay for insurance and manage the influx of cash.

Some have offered to drive Robertson for free, while others including a local dealership want to give him a free car.

Robertson began making the daily trek to Schain Mold & Engineering after his car stopped working in 2005, and bus service was repeatedly cut back.
