Super Bowl XLIX Breaks NFL Championship Game Records

SOUTHFIELD (CBS Detroit) - The most-watched football game was also the most Tweeted Super Bowl game in the history of Twitter.

More the 28.4 million global Tweets were sent during the telecast of the game and halftime show, Twitter shared in a blog post. Last year, more than 24.9 Tweets were sent.

"#SB49 was the most Tweeted @SuperBowl ever, surpassing last year's game," Brian Poliakoff, who works in sports communications for Twitter, wrote in a blog post.

The most Tweeted moments during the game and half time show were:

  • Malcolm Butler (@Mac_BZ) intercepts a pass by Russell Wilson (@DangeRussWilson) 1 yard from the goal line with 20 seconds left in the game: 395,000 TPM
  • @Patriots defeat @Seahawks to become #SB49 champions: 379,000 TPM
  • End of @KatyPerry's halftime performance: 284,000 TPM

Twitter also broke out the Tweets discussing the halftime show featuring Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott. Twitter stated over 3 million Tweets relating the to the energetic, fireworks-filled show.

The conversation on Twitter also was driven by the teams, NFL players and brands during the game. The Tweets included:

 

While the Super Bowl match up between New England and Seattle was big, it wasn't the most Tweeted event in the history of Twitter. That title goes to the World Cup semi-final between Brazil and Germany. Soccer fans sent more than 35.6 million Tweets.
