Metro Detroit Students Get Third Day Off After Record Snowfall

DETROIT (WWJ) - Thousands of students in Metro Detroit are getting another day off because the roads and sidewalks are too dangerous for schools to be open following last weekend's record snowfall.

More than 100 schools are closed in southeastern Michigan Wednesday, including all Detroit Public Schools -- which are closed due to unsafe walking conditions.

A statement released by DPS says the decision to close school for a third day in a row was made particularly because the city's sidewalks are impassable due to the amount of snow.

More than an inch fell late Tuesday and early Wednesday in metro Detroit, covering up nearly two feet of snow that fell over a 24-hour period last weekend. CBS 62 Chief Meteorologist Jim Madaus said we haven't seen the last of the snow just yet.

"Later on Wednesday, a little more snow is possible as another system moves in from the west, leaving maybe an inch of so in areas south of I-94," he said. "But temperatures are right around normal for this time of year, upper 20s and close to 30 degrees in parts of southeastern Michigan."

Madaus said clouds will give way to bright, sunny skies Thursday -- but that sun will be deceiving.

"It will be much, much colder Thursday, 13 degrees with 3 your morning low and then only 1 degree your morning low on Friday," Madaus said, adding that wind chills are going to make it feel even colder.
