Friend: Woman Drove To Buy Heroin After Fatal Carjacking At Burger King
WATERFORD TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - A woman accused of stealing a pickup truck at a metro Detroit Burger King and running over the 76-year-old owner has been ordered tried on first-degree murder and carjacking charges.
A Waterford Township district judge says there's enough evidence to bind over 38-year-old Ruth Pozdol for trial in Oakland County Circuit Court.
Authorities say Pozdol grabbed the keys from Clifford Van Haywald of Walled Lake and crushed him under the tires when he tried to stop her from driving away.
She'd walked away from a nearby drug treatment center prior to the incident, Jan. 18, in Waterford Township, according to prosecutors.
At a probable cause hearing, Mike Silagi testified he drove with Pozdol to a Subway restaurant for a sandwich, then accompanied her to buy and shoot up heroin.
Silagi told the court that when he learned of Van Haywald's death, he advised Pozdol to surrender, then called police.
Police say Podzol, a mother of two, has a history of narcotics abuse.
Van Haywald was a regular customer at the Burger King where employees called him "Pops."
