Detroit Schools Entice Students To Show Up On Count Day With Free Monster Jam Tickets

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Public Schools district is hoping some free tickets will help boost attendance figures on the state-wide Count Day.

All students who attend school on Wednesday, Feb. 11 will receive two tickets to attend Monster Jam at Ford Field on Feb. 28.

"While DPS emphasizes throughout the year that students have to be on time and in school every day all day, we appreciate strategic partnerships with organizations like Feld Entertainment, Inc. that offer a fun and creative way to engage students and drive home the importance of attendance," Superintendent of Academics Karen Ridgeway said in a statement.

Meantime, state education officials are launching a campaign later this year that will "use humor to drive home just how important it is for kids to be engaged in school. The campaign — launching initially in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties — will come with a video game that has a twist: Getting to the next level will require a student to do well in school."

DPS has hosted similar attendance challenges with where students participate in online social media contests to track their attendance rates, take part in educational scavenger hunts, engage in online chat groups about college readiness, and more, for a chance to win prizes such as celebrity visits and in-school celebratory events.
