Detroit To Release App To Bring City Hall To The 'Pockets' Of Residents

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Residents in Detroit will soon have "city hall in their pocket" when the city releases the Improve Detroit app.

Mayor Mike Duggan announced Tuesday during his State of the City address that the Improve Detroit app will be live within a month and give residents the opportunity to report a problem directly to city departments and learn when their concern has been addressed.

"You've got all these different departments and your experience in dialing them is going to be quite varied as far as the response and we said that's nonsense," Duggan said in the speech.

When the smart phone app, and website for desktop or laptop computers, is operational, residents will be able to put their address on the website and report if a street light is out, a street not plowed or if there is illegal dumping.

Once the issue has been reported, the resident will receive an email from the city acknowledging that it has been received. Additionally, the mayor also will get a copy of the work order. When it has been fixed, the resident will receive an email letting them know their issue has been addressed, Duggan said.

"We are going  to change the way city hall interacts with you," said Duggan in his speech.

He later told WWJ in an interview that resident will have "city hall in their pocket" with the app.

This is the latest technological advancement for the city of Detroit which launched a Detroit Police app, a Detroit Department of Transportation app that offers real-time tracking of buses and redesigned city website that is optimized for mobile devices.
