Freshii Brings Healthy Option To Detroit Dining Scene (Video)

By Edward Cardenas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - A new fresh dining concept in downtown Detroit is bringing green to diners meals and "green" features to the Campus Martius-area eatery.

Freshii opened this week on the first floor of the 1001 Woodward building that includes soups and fresh, made-to-order salads, wraps, burritos and smoothies.

"Having been downtown for the past five years, I've just seen the demand for healthier options continue to grow," said Randy Dickow, Freshii owner. "I think people care a lot more today than may have in the past what they are putting in their body."

This is the first stand-alone location in Detroit for the fast-growing, Toronto-based company which features not only healthy meals, but environmentally friendly business practices.

Packaging, napkins and utensils are all biodegradable or recyclable. Everything you take from the store either biodegradable or is easily recyclable. The restaurant also opts not use no energy-hungry dishwashers, hoods, ranges or ovens, and only use natural cleaning products.

The restaurant opens at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast, and will be open until 5 p.m. for dining during the day or even takeout for dinner.

With the opening of Freshii, Dickow now has three restaurants in Detroit including Lunchtime Global in the First National Building and Sweet Lorraine's Fabulous Mac n'Cheez! in the Renaissance Center.

"I have wanted to grow with the city, and found some great concepts I thought this area lacked," Dickow said. "We are super excited to be downtown and bring another concept and continue to grow with the city."

Freshii is the latest of four restaurants concepts to open in Bedrock Real Estate buildings in Detroit. These restaurants - which feature craft cocktails, Middle Eastern dishes and fresh salads - serve the nearly 100,000 people who work in the Central Business District.
