Investigation Determines Double Crash On I-75 Not Result Of Hit-And-Run
AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - A traffic jam on I-75 that stretched for nearly 10 miles Friday morning was not, in fact, caused by a hit-and-run accident as first thought by police.
The situation unfolded just before 5:30 a.m. on the southbound freeway near Lapeer Road, when a 33-year-old driver lost control of his Ford Escort and hit the median wall. A Chevy Malibu then smashed into the Escort, according to police.
Early eyewitness reports had police believing it was a hit-and-run situation, setting off a search for a Ford Explorer Sport Trac believed to have been involved in the crash. The driver of that SUV came forward, however, and an investigation determined the vehicle was not involved, police said.
Following the accident, the Waterford man was transported to McLaren Oakland Hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Malibu, a 53-year-old Mount Morris man, was also transported to the hospital with non-life threating injuries. Their current conditions are unknown.
A section of the freeway in Auburn Hills has reopened after being reduced to one lane for about four hours following the accident.
