Black History Month: Embracing Feminism From A 21st Century Perspective

DETROIT (WWJ) - "I was really looking for something that would mesh my personal passion for advancing girls and women with my professional goals," says Yodit Mesfin Johnson.

That goal was the genesis for Lips and Hips, an organization founded by Johnson; a mom, wife and career woman who wants to reach out and empower females.

"The name was meant to normalize our voice, our femininity, to embrace feminism from a 21st century perspective," says Yodit.

'Dream, plan, do.' That motivation is at the heart of the vision for the six-year-old organization along with leadership training, community events and a year-long curriculum. Lips and Hips works with young girls at the downtown youth boxing program, Johnson had the girls start a lip gloss line to help pay for their annual trip.

"We teach them some entrepreneurial principles but also help them raise money toward that goal - so we are out at vending events all the time ... at community events - the girls can learn ... some lifelong skills," Yodit says.
