Draft Released Of Wording For May Road Funding Proposal

LANSING (AP) — Michigan's elections director has released proposed wording of a road funding ballot proposal asking voters if they want to increase the state sales tax.

Chris Thomas published his proposed language Friday. The Board of State Canvassers will meet next week to determine the constitutional amendment's wording in the May 5 special election.

The proposed 100-word summary begins by saying the 6 percent sales tax would rise to 7 percent and be eliminated on gasoline and diesel fuel. It also says the amendment would revise permissible uses of the school aid fund and trigger laws that include increasing the gas tax and dedicating revenue for roads.

People can comment on the wording before close of business Tuesday.
