Record-Shattering Temperatures Keep Metro Detroit In Deep Freeze

DETROIT (WWJ) - It's so cold in the D. Literally, it's colder than ever before -- on this date in history, anyway.

The National Weather Service said a low temperature of 11 below zero was recorded Friday morning at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, "shattering" the previous record of 8 below zero set in 1934.

[SCHOOL CLOSINGS: Check The List]

All public schools in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Monroe and St Clair counties are closed Friday because it's too dangerous to venture outdoors in this bitter cold.

A Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday for Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Frigid winds combined with air temperatures between minus 10 and minus 25 can create wind chills as low as 25 below zero.

The bitterly cold wind chills could lead to frost bite in less than 30 minutes, and prolonged exposure to the extreme cold could lead to hypothermia. If you must venture outdoors, be sure to cover as much skin as possible with appropriate winter clothing.

It's the third weather record broken in just two days in metro Detroit. A record low of minus 5 was set Thursday morning, one degree below the previous record for the date in 1936. Thursday's high temperature was only 7 degrees, breaking the record for the lowest high.

Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:
