Woman Says Court Mailed Summons To Long-Dead Husband

CARO, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A county court in Michigan mailed a summons directing a man who died in jail 17 years ago to answer for nonpayment of fines, fees and legal costs from his criminal case, according to his widow.

Monoco Lee said she received the letter addressed to Louis Peters II on Valentine's Day.

"I opened it up and I'm looking at it like what," Lee told WNEM-TV.

Peters died in 1997 at the Tuscola County Jail while awaiting trial for assaulting and stalking her, Lee said.

"I was the victim. So it brought up a lot of bad memories," she said. "I mean, I'm sitting here shaking just thinking about it. It took me a long time to get away from him and to get him out of my head and now the courts are bringing it back?"

The letter ordered Peters to show up Thursday at the 54th Judicial Circuit Court in Caro, about 80 miles north of Detroit.

"He died in their jail," Lee said. "How can they say ... 17 years later 'let's go after him for fees' and all that?"

Court administrator Donna Fraczek told The Associated Press that officials are "looking into" the matter.
