Touching Story At Heart Of Michigan-Made 'Wrapped In Love' Accessory Line

DETROIT (WWJ) - Stuck in the hospital? That's no reason not to look fabulous.

Karen MacDonald, who for 30 years was a spokeswoman for Taubman Centers, has turned her attention to helping people too sick or injured to dress up feel confident.

The "Wrapped In Love" accessory line was inspired by MacDonald's mother when she was in the hospital before she passed away several years ago.

"It was Christmas Eve and she didn't want any visitors because she felt she didn't look presentable due to her illness," MacDonald said.  "I felt helpless, so I decided to make her a wrap and put it around her patient gown, just to make her feel special."

MacDonald said that was the first time her mom smiled in weeks.

"I knew that one day I wanted to start a company to produce fashion accessories that people could wear when they're in the hospital or recuperating," she said.

Since then, MacDonald has launched her Wrapped in Love line, making beautiful, functional accessories.

"They go over the head, so it's something easy," she said. "My mom was very weak, so I kept that in mind; and also worked with a number of medical professionals, nurses, to get their input."

The wraps, which are made in Michigan, are available online and will be sold starting later this year in boutiques and hospital gift shops around the country, with 2 percent of proceeds going to support charities, beginning with Hospice of Michigan.
