Ex-High School Volleyball Coach Gets Jail Time For Arranging Sex With Teen
MACOMB (WWJ) - A 53-year-old high school volleyball coach will spend at least the next four years behind bars after he was caught trying to arrange a sexual encounter with a 13-year-old girl and her mother.
Charles Goubert, of Emmett, was sentenced Tuesday to 4 years, 2 months to 20 years on three counts of child sexually abusive activity. In exchange for his guilty plea in January, prosecutors dropped three counts of using a computer to commit a crime.
During the hearing, Goubert read a statement to the court, apologizing to his family for the "immoral acts" he committed, saying "It was a mistake, one I deeply regret." But Macomb County Circuit Judge Mary Chrzanowski was unmoved.
"I think you and I have a different interpretation of what a mistake is," she said. "You made a conscious decision to act."
Goubert, the former assistant volleyball coach at Yale High School, was arrested last October after a lengthy investigation by the Macomb County Sheriff's Computer Crimes Unit.
According to investigations, Goubert had posted an ad on a social media website indicating he was looking to meet a 13-year-old girl for the purpose of performing sexual acts on her. Pretending to be the mother of a young girl, undercover detectives initiated contact with Goubet via e-mail and text messages and arranged a meeting. When Goubert showed up at the location in Clinton Township, he was immediately taken into custody.
After his arrest, Goubert was placed on administrative leave by the Yale School District. His contract has since been terminated.
